Oh dear, the pretty well known envato Product „Visual Composer“ now is renamed to „WPBakery Page Builder“. I think this is the worst marketing move I have seen in a long time. Changing the name when having such a big market share as „Visual Composer“ does, feels like a very bad move. And from a user’s perspective it is perfectly useless and confusing.

While „Visual Composer“ is rather descriptive, „WPBakery Page Builder“ too long and distracting. Having the company name in the title is even worse. This string of shit as a plugin name and does not even fit in the WordPress backend sidebar menu. Imagine WordPress moving from „WordPress“ to „Automattic WordPress“. Yikes, that would suck.

A plugin for chefs

And the icon! Oh dear – What is this? A plugin for recipes? Kitchen Story shizzlamnizzl. I guess it tries to be chefs hat – but it is too big, ugly and without any useful meaning in the page builder business. I don’t want to cook, I want smooth and easy web design. IN the end this leaves me confused, and I am really disappointed and hope this is a joke.

There are two different products now and a new one under the old name

The new product to the left has the old name. The old product. to the right has an ugly cloud icon and a new shitty name.

To make things worse they seemingly launched a new product under the old name „Visual Composer“. I do not know if this is to build on the existing brand and gain attention. But this surely is the worst thing they could have done. The new product hardly has anything to do with the old product, but it took it’s name.

Screw plugin based page builders – Gutenberg to the rescue

But there is hope down the long road. The Good thing is, that Automattics initiative „Gutenberg“ will rather soon replace any need for visual composers at all. It receives a lot criticism but you can already tell that it is going in the right direction. And ultimately becoming a core part of WordPress gives it enough momentum to become something really cool. As of 2017 you can join the beta test easily from the plugin’s repository. Rumors have it that Gutenberg will be replacing that old school classic editor in WordPress 5.
